Committees & Officers

Church Council Meetings:

All members of the church are elected as Council Members, and are encouraged to attend the council meetings.  We meet the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. Traditionally we start with prayer followed by the reading of the last meeting’s minutes, the financial report, the report from the nurture committee, the outreach committee, the witness or evangelism committee, the trustees, U.M.W. any other committees such as pastor/parish committee, nominating committee, and any other temporary committees that might be set up and the pastor’s report, followed by old business and new business.

The Council meeting is a planning session in which we decide together, after prayerful consideration, (not just during the night of the meeting but throughout the  month prior to the meeting) the direction in which God is leading us. We cannot move in the direction God would desire us to move without much prayer. We, with God’s help, discern what should be our top priorities, what programs we want to emphasis, what needs to be done and when it needs to be done. We realize we only have so many resources, so we want to be good stewards of God’s gifts.

Committee Meetings:

The individual committees meet at 6:30 p.m on Council Meeting nights, or at other times as needed. Those who are not on a specific committee are asked to join the steering committee. Any member of the church is invited to join the steering committee anytime they would like. We try to have this group be the visionaries and creative geniuses, the group that evaluates the overall ministry of the church. We want to encourage the church to keep what works but revamp the things we do that don’t work or have become ineffective. We also want to introduce new and creative ways of doing ministry.

The decisions that are made in these committee meetings are presented before the Council at each meeting either by the chair of that committee or a representative. This is for the purpose of keeping the Council informed and their giving approval so that the church can be united in their mission and ministry.

Relay For Life

Relay For Life is unique. It rallies communities of people from all walks of life – often around neighbors whose lives have been touched by cancer. It is a celebration of life for those who have survived, a memorial for loved ones we have lost and a chance to join forces in a powerful fight.

Relay For Life began in May 1985 when Dr. Gordon Klatt, “the founder of Relay”, took a 24-hour journey around a Tacoma, Washington, track and raised $27,000.00 to support the American Cancer Society’s work. The next year, 220 people on 19 teams joined him. A representative from each team was on the track at all times – walking, jogging or running.

In honor of the battle against cancer, the first lap of the relay is designated as the “Survivors Lap”. All participants share a special candle lighting ceremony to remember those individuals who have been affected by cancer. Luminaries named in honor or memory of cancer patients are lit and placed around the perimeter of the track.

Every year, 1.3 million people are diagnosed with cancer. These victims are not nameless statistics. They are fathers, brothers, sisters and mothers – people right here in our community. That is why the families of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church have joined together with the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.

Each Relay team is challenged to raise a minimum of $100.00 per team member. Mt. Carmel’s “Fishin’ for a Cure” team will meet this challenge through the following fundraisers:

  • Designed and sold Mt. Carmel logo T-shirts

  • "Fishin' For a Cure" cookbook sales for American Cancer Society

  • Chili / Hot Dog Supper (all supplies donated by members

  • (MARY KAY COSMETIC party, 50% of all sales donated to the team

  • Crib and Queen size quilts, hand quilted by members of our congregation will be auctioned the night of the relay, with proceeds going to the team total.

  • A 5-gallon jug has been placed in the vestibule for donations.

Continuation of programs promoting increased visibility in the community:

Our job as a church family is to try our best to make the presence of the lord visible within the community.  This can be accomplished through our community projects.  Let's take an initiative and let people know that Mount Carmel Church cares about our community.  Below is a list of some of our ommunity outreach programs.  If you have a special idea, feel free to let Mark know about it!

Council Meetings:

As a church, it makes it hard to expand our ministry without a way for us to come together as a family and get things done.  We would like to have committee meetings at least once between each board meeting to discuss new ideas pertaining to the committee you are in.  Above is a complete list of all committees as well as the members.  We encourage you to join your committees e-mail forum to receive any announcements that are addressed to your committee.  Let's come together as a church and spread the gospel throughout the world.

Refocus on Youth:

  • Start with a strong leadership in the youth ministries and continue with a sound building maintenance program
  • Plan more activities to get the youth involved in the church

Music Requests

Music is a powerful tool in spreading the gospel of Christ. The choir has come a long way in building up it's musical selection and we would love to have input from all members. We invite everyone to join us for choir practice on Thursdays at 6:30. There is a great wealth of talent in our church that we would love to see come out. Do not hesitate to let us know if you would like to provide the special music for a service. Maybe you have a favorite hymn or praise song you have heard on the radio. If you do, feel free to e-mail Joan or Shannon and we will try our best to find the music for it.

Igniting Ministries

Igniting ministries is an exciting new kind of evangelism, using modern technology and the common language of television to spread the good news of Christ to a world in need.  It's a national advertising campaign, supplemented by regional and local church efforts, to help raise the awareness of Methodist Church ministries.

PURPOSE:

  • Increase awareness and recognition of the United Methodist Church's basic beliefs
  • Foster among new members positive feelings and willingness to visit a United Methodist Church
  • Renew a sense of commitments in United Methodists.

GOALS:

  • Positively impact church membership
  • Inform and energize non-members and current members
  • Enhance the church's image on local communities
  • Strengthen the purpose and mission of the church

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

  • Invite friends to church
  • Organize a Sunday School class social event to attract folks
  • Talk with friends an co-workers about advertisements
  • Participate in regional training events
  • Be prepared to witness, share, learn, and discuss when friends begin to arrive
  • Create invitations for your friends
  • Send personalized cards from your Sunday School class
  • Send e-mail invitations and include a link to our website
  • Offer to go get them on Sunday morning
  • Try a different day of the week for your class meetings if everyone's schedule is better on a different day

NOW IS THE TIME....

Igniting Ministry offers us the unique opportunity to step forward to announce the call of Christ in ways impossible until recently. This is the time to reclaim our tradition and to put the light of Christ proudly on the electronic lamp stand where it will shine for all to see! The tools of technology and the mass media can be harnessed to reach people in unprecedented ways.” - Bishop Rueben P. Job
